Raising Angora Rabbits

Angora rabbit farming is exciting. Raised primarily for their wool, Angora rabbits serve as an alternative to other kinds of livestock husbandry.

In the fibre production market, Angora rabbit wool is in high demand and regarded as superior quality.

According to Agribook.co.za, “Angora wool is one of the most expensive and desired fashion fibres. Due to its thermal properties the wool is also widely used to manufacture garments worn for the effective relief of pain from arthritis and rheumatism.”

Most Angora rabbit breeds produce between 16 and 20 ounces of Angora wool per year.

The Angora wool is lightweight and soft, making it ideal as a garment that can be worn close to the skin. When combined with other fibres like silk, alpaca, or lamb’s wool, it lends a luxurious quality.

The benefits of raising Angora rabbits is that they are easy to keep and inexpensive to feed compared to other animals. Again, they breed fast; increasing numbers of animals for wool production.

While the benefits are great, Angora rabbits can be a lot of work. To keep them in good condition and feeling valued, they do require daily grooming and care.
