Moringa, the wonder tree!

Did you know? The moringa industry is worth approximately $5.5 billion worldwide (R92.5 billion) and is projected to expand in years to come as demands for a healthy lifestyle, organic foods and dietary supplementation are increasing.

The moringa tree, in many of our African cultures, has been part of our diet but we have never viewed the crop in a way that it could be farmed and commercialised.

Our people have known that moringa has vitamins, minerals and amino acids that the human body needs, but, because it was just growing in the wild, we neglected the opportunity of looking at the moringa tree as a crop that can be farmed.

Moringa tree is considered one of the most nutritious trees in the world. According agribook.co.za, the leaves can be used to make moringa juice or tea. They can be cooked or dried and processed into moringa powder which can be used as a nutritional additive in soup, porridge and drinks.

Moringa can be used address malnutrition in our communities, and in addition to human use it can be used for feeding animals.

Moringa is a serious farming opportunity. Let us talk, love and do farming.
