In 2017, South African fanciers paid about R5 million for a racing pigeon. What? A pigeon. The news came as a surprise to many, but it was all joy to those in the pigeon farming business.

Pigeon farming requires less labour and low investment, in fact many raise pigeons as a leisure activity.

  • Pigeons are domestic birds, less prone to diseases and are easy to handle.
  • They start laying eggs when six months and produce two baby pigeon per month on an average.
  • Pigeon eggs take 18 days to hatch.
  • Pigeons collect food by themselves and their feeding costs is low.
  • Pigeons produce a good manure for crop cultivation.
  • Pigeons help to balance our ecosystems by eating different types of insects.
